Winner's Bag: Lucas Glover, U.S. Open
Lucas Glover became only the second player to win a major that he had never made the cut in with his two-shot victory over Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes at the U.S. Open on Monday.
Glover, who along with Duval is a Nike Golf staff player, used a full bag of Nike equipment and a NIke One Tour D golf ball. He used the Nike SQ Sumo2 driver, becoming the first player to carry a square-shaped driver in a major win. He averaged 291.12 yards off the tee despite the wet conditions around Bethpage State Park's Black Course. He also had SQ2 fairway woods, CCI Forged irons and SV Tour wedges in his bag. In Glover's hands, Nike's prototype putter earned its fourth global win; Paul Casey also used it for three victories. Nike's been extremely tight-lipped about the putter's specifications and has asked staff players to not discuss it in detail, but the putter has been in players' bags since late last season. Stephen Ames, Justin Leonard and Trevor Immelman are also playing the putter. Glover, who has had the putter in his bag since the Bob Hope Classic early this year, has moved from 116th in putts per round and 107th in putts per GIR in 2008 to 23rd in putts per round and 32nd in putts per GIR so far this season. - Jennifer Gardner, GPA Equipment Editor |
